Fulfillment of Prophecy (Number 3 with added value!)

Prophecy:
Isaiah 9:6 &7;  "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and unto his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgement and with justice from henceforth even for ever.  The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this."

Notes:

  • Isaiah uses the prophetic perfect tense- the prophet sees him as though he was already born
  • The first three titles imply divinity:
    • Wonderful, Counselor - is actually one term in Hebrew; wonder is indicative of a miracle, counselor is often used in parallel with king.  Thus miraculous counsel is given by this God-like king.
    • The mighty God - Isaiah uses the Hebrew to give emphasis that this is one who is God Himself
    • Everlasting Father literally means Father of Eternity - he alone is the source of eternal life
  • Prince of Peace this title adds the assurance that the prince will be Davidic (see Isaiah 11 & Matthew 1 below) who will be a benevolent ruler bringing eternal peace on earth through the establishment of His kingdom
  • These titles and scriptures make immediate sense to the modern day Christian (with the benefit of hind-sight!) as we now know that this Prince (Jesus) was/is God Himself incarnate!

Isaiah 11:1 - 5;  "And there came forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and the spirit of counsel and might, and the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD; and he shall not judge after the sight of the eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of the ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.  And the righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins."

Notes:

  • The "tree" of the line of David will be cut down and that a shoot must grow our or the stock of Jesse before it will flourish again
  • Jesse was King David's father and therefore forefather of the Davidic line
  • The branch is personalized as the Messiah himself; the spirit of the Lord refers to the seven fold Spirit of God in Revelations 4:5 "And out of the throne proceeded forth lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God"
  • the Hebrew words for counsel and might here are the same as those used in the description of the divine Child in Isaiah 9 above
  • Because the Spirit of the Lord is upon Him, the Messiah will not judge after the sight of his eyes, for he will have true spiritual vision and will judge the poor with righteousness
  • He will rule the earth with his rod [better scepter] of his mouth, the power of his spoken word, by which he will slay the wicked with His breath (Revelations 19:15 "And out of his mouth shall go forth, that with it he would smite [strike] the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the wine press of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.")

Isaiah:

  • Hebrew name means 'Yahweh is Salvation'
  • Son of one of Jerusalem's prominent citizens and so would have access to leadership of Judah
  • Called into prophetic ministry in the year of king Uzziah's death - 740 B.C.
  • Possibly lived until 681 B.C.

Fulfillment:
Matthew 1:1;  "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."

Matthew 1:5 & 6  "And Salmon begat Boaz of Rachab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias."
